Application for Change of Status of Residence (Visa Change)
This application is required when a foreign national residing in Japan under a certain status of residence wishes to engage in activities corresponding to a different status of residence due to a change in their purpose of stay. It is the official procedure to change to a new status of residence.
What Is a Change of Status of Residence (Immigration Control Act, Article 20)?
A foreign national who already holds a status of residence and wishes to change the purpose of their stay to engage in activities corresponding to a different status must apply to the Minister of Justice for permission to change their status of residence. Through this procedure, foreign nationals residing in Japan can obtain a new status of residence that allows them to engage in activities that were not permitted under their previous status—without leaving Japan. Applicants must follow the procedures stipulated by ministerial ordinance and submit an application for change of status of residence to the Minister of Justice.
